THE IDEA

A workplace that feels more like a home than an office

Wallace Cotton is a family-owned New Zealand homeware business whose products have been in homes worldwide for more than 14 years. Their focus on beautiful design and great quality is reflected in the fit-out of their Auckland offices, which are enhanced by Cityscape Atlanta carpet tiles from Advance Flooring.

Rather than engage a designer, Wallace Cotton guided the fit-out themselves, from the floor plan up. ‘We were striving to create a space that was aspirational, yet felt more like a home than an office,’ says general manager Bill Wallace. ‘That aesthetic runs through the finishes and the furniture, with a focus on timber and warm, comfortable spaces.’

Knowing they wanted to incorporate the warmth of carpet into their design, they looked for a more commercial solution than broadloom could offer. Cityscape Atlanta carpet tiles gave them everything they needed.

THE DESIGN

Subtle, restrained colours to warm and soften the interior

The upstairs offices and boardroom are arranged around a central lobby, separated by glass partitions with black powder-coated joinery. Downstairs there is another glazed wall between the offices and the warehouse.

With their variegated pattern in shades of grey, Cityscape Atlanta carpet tiles complement the design scheme’s restrained colour palette and extensive use of wood. ‘We wanted something dark to contrast with the light walls,’ says Bill. ‘A subtle pattern that would enhance the joinery colour.’

Visually, the use of wooden walls, floors, light fittings and furniture warms up the office environment. The Cityscape tiles serve to soften the overall effect. ‘Acoustics are very important, too, as we have a lot of hard surfaces,’ says Bill.

THE OUTCOME

Choosing Cityscape Atlanta tiles gave Wallace Cotton everything they needed – a stylish design that offers the warmth and comfort of carpet, with hard-wearing performance that maintains its good looks.

‘In our previous space, we had broadloom carpet, and when walkway areas wore down, we had to replace the whole lot. We were recommended Advance, and so with the Cityscape tile we can simply swap out a tile if a tile is damaged or gets too worn.’
