THE IDEA

A cultural gateway to knowledge and connection

Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui — meaning “the window to the wider world” — is the reimagined heart of Wellington’s civic life, reopening in 2026 after extensive strengthening and redesign.

More than a library, the project represents a deeply cultural and community-focused space shaped through close collaboration with mana whenua. The design weaves together architecture, art and mātauranga Māori, transforming the building into a living cultural expression where learning, creativity and connection intersect.

Central to this vision is the idea of transition — moving from the city into a shared place of knowledge and belonging. This is expressed most clearly at the building’s entry, where the physical threshold becomes a continuation of the cultural and architectural narrative.

THE DESIGN

A seamless transition between outside and inside

The redesign of Te Matapihi is inspired by te taiao — the natural environment, drawing on the forms, textures and patterns of native flora and the historical landscape of the Wellington waterfront.

Edges, entries and pathways were carefully reconsidered to create a more open and connected building, strengthening the relationship between the civic square and the interior spaces beyond.

At the primary entrances, this approach is expressed through a carefully layered material transition. Advance Flooring’s Shuttle entrance matting system was installed on a 45-degree angle, aligning with the directional language of the architecture and guiding movement into the space.

Different insert colours were installed to reflect the broader interior palette and cultural storytelling, allowing the matting to visually connect with both the exterior paving and interior finishes. The result is a threshold that reads not as a separate functional element, but as a continuous, integrated surface.

THE SOLUTION

Performance integrated into the design narrative

In a building expected to welcome thousands of visitors daily, the entrance flooring needed to deliver robust performance while maintaining the integrity of the architectural vision.

Advance Flooring’s Shuttle entrance matting system provides effective dirt and moisture control at the building edge, protecting interior finishes and supporting safe circulation throughout the public space.

The modular aluminium construction ensures long-term durability under constant foot traffic, while the textile inserts contribute to slip resistance in wet conditions.

What defines this installation is its integration into the design language. The angled layout and custom insert colours transform the matting from a purely functional product into a deliberate architectural element. By extending the geometry and tone of the exterior paving into the interior, the flooring reinforces the idea of a continuous journey rather than a defined boundary.

THE OUTCOME

A threshold that reflects identity and intent

The completed Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui stands as a renewed civic landmark — a place shaped by culture, community and connection.

At the point of entry, Advance Flooring’s Shuttle matting system plays a subtle but essential role. By combining performance, durability and design intent, the system supports the daily function of the building while contributing to the overall architectural narrative.

The angled layout and custom colour integration ensure that the threshold is not just a transition point, but a continuation of the cultural story — a seamless movement from the outside world into a space of knowledge, creativity and belonging.
