THE IDEA
A cultural gateway to knowledge and connection
Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui — meaning “the window to the wider world” — is the reimagined heart of Wellington’s civic life, reopening in 2026 after extensive strengthening and redesign.
More than a library, the project represents a deeply cultural and community-focused space shaped through close collaboration with mana whenua. The design weaves together architecture, art and mātauranga Māori, transforming the building into a living cultural expression where learning, creativity and connection intersect.
Central to this vision is the idea of transition — moving from the city into a shared place of knowledge and belonging. This is expressed most clearly at the building’s entry, where the physical threshold becomes a continuation of the cultural and architectural narrative.
