THE IDEA

A welcoming threshold to a global destination

The New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC) has been conceived as a new civic gateway for Auckland—a place where local identity and international ambition meet. Occupying half a city block within the SkyCity precinct, the building is designed to host global conferences, exhibitions and performances while remaining intrinsically connected to its urban context and cultural setting.

From the outset, the architects envisioned NZICC as more than a destination venue. The design places strong emphasis on arrival, with entry zones acting as a transition between the city and the interior experience. Within this sequence, the entrance flooring plays a quiet but critical role, forming the first physical point of contact for visitors arriving from all directions.

Advance Flooring supplied its ExtraTread entrance matting system to support this first impression—delivering performance at scale while integrating seamlessly with the architectural language of the building.

THE DESIGN

Material expression and seamless integration

The approach to NZICC is defined by layered materials, cultural artworks and a restrained palette that references the landscape and craft traditions of Aotearoa. This material discipline continues through the building’s entrances, where durability and visual continuity are addressed simultaneously.

The ExtraTread system was specified in bronze anodised aluminium to align with the warm metallic tones used throughout the entry sequence. The system incorporates polyamide fibre inserts, including a wider absorbent strip engineered to capture up to 37% more moisture than comparable entrance matting systems.

The low‑profile nature of ExtraTread allowed the matting to be fitted seamlessly in and around the building’s revolving door systems, maintaining flush transitions and uninterrupted pedestrian flow. This integration supports the clean, resolved aesthetic of the entry while accommodating the technical complexity of large‑scale revolving doors.

THE SOLUTION

Engineered performance at the point of arrival

As one of New Zealand’s most heavily trafficked public venues, the NZICC requires entrance systems that perform consistently under extreme daily use. The ExtraTread entrance matting system is designed to manage dirt and moisture effectively at the door, helping to protect interior finishes while reducing maintenance demands.

The combination of robust aluminium profiles and high‑performance polyamide inserts ensures long‑term durability and moisture absorption, particularly during Auckland’s wetter months. By capturing moisture at the threshold, the system supports safer internal circulation and preserves the appearance of interior flooring beyond the entry zone.

THE OUTCOME

A first impression that performs and endures.

With the NZICC now open, the building delivers a clear and confident arrival experience befitting its role as New Zealand’s premier convention and events venue. The entrance sequence sets the tone—calm, considered and welcoming—before visitors move into the activity of the building beyond.

The ExtraTread entrance matting system plays an essential supporting role in this experience. By combining architectural finish, seamless integration and high‑performance moisture control, the system ensures that the most important first impression of the building continues to perform long after opening day.
