THE IDEA

The redevelopment of Mt Maunganui College was driven by a vision to create future-focused learning environments that support contemporary education while fostering a strong connection to place. Designed by MOAA Architects and constructed by Stead Construction, the project delivers new teaching spaces that provide flexible, inclusive environments for both students and educators.

Part of a wider redevelopment programme comprising 32 specialised teaching spaces across three new two-storey buildings, the project was conceived to support diverse learning styles while responding to the unique character of its Bay of Plenty setting. The design draws inspiration from the college's relationship with Mauao and the surrounding coastline, creating spaces that reflect the natural environment and strengthen a sense of community identity.

THE DESIGN

Advance Flooring was engaged early in the design phase, working closely with MOAA Architects, Stead Construction and Modo Flooring to develop a flooring concept that complemented the architectural vision and strengthened the project's connection to place.

Using Kingston and Arrowtown ComfortBack carpet tiles in plank format, Advance Flooring facilitated a custom layout design and colour strategy tailored specifically for the building. One floor incorporated layered green tones inspired by Mauao and the surrounding landscape. A second floor utilised a series of blue tones inspired by the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Throughout the design process, Advance Flooring collaborated closely with the project team and Modo Flooring to ensure the custom layouts, colour transitions and installation methodology could be seamlessly delivered on site.

THE SOLUTION

Kingston and Arrowtown ComfortBack carpet tiles were selected for their ability to combine design flexibility with the performance requirements of a modern educational facility. The modular plank format enabled unique layout patterns and colour transitions that brought the project's place-based narrative to life.

Working alongside Stead Construction and Modo Flooring, Advance Flooring ensured the custom flooring design was delivered as intended. ComfortBack construction contributed to improved acoustic comfort, while the carpet tile system provides practical long-term maintenance benefits through easy tile replacement.

THE OUTCOME

The completed redevelopment provides Mt Maunganui College with contemporary learning environments that successfully balance performance, functionality and a strong connection to place. By translating the landscapes of Mauao and the surrounding coastline into the interior environment, the flooring contributes to a distinctive identity that is immediately recognisable to students, staff and the wider community.

Through early collaboration between MOAA Architects, Stead Construction, Modo Flooring and Advance Flooring, the custom flooring design was successfully delivered from concept through to installation.
