Timber vs. VariUse: The Smarter Choice for Multi-Use Sports Flooring

Traditionally, timber has been the preferred flooring for gymnasiums and sports arenas. However, modern alternatives like VariUse synthetic sport flooring offer several advantages worth considering when designing a new sports floor.

Why safety matters in sports flooring

Safety is a critical factor, especially for floors used by both children and adults. For school gymnasiums, the duty of care is particularly significant. Timber floors can fall short in providing adequate protection, especially for fall, smaller, lighter bodies during trips or falls.

In contrast, synthetic sport flooring like VariUse delivers the highest levels of comfort and protection. Its superior shock absorption minimizes impact forces, offering optimal safety and helping to reduce the risk of injury.

Performance consistency: A winning advantage

Wooden sports floors inherently lack uniformity due to the irregular placement of shock pads, sleepers and other underfloor supports. This inconsistency can negatively impact sports performance.

VariUse flooring, however, provides a consistent performance across the entire surface, from uniform shock absorption to reliable ball rebound—offering a clear advantage for athletes.

Additionally, the lifetime cost of a flooring surface is an important consideration. Wooden sports floors require substantial maintenance, including recoating every 1-3 years and full sanding and recoating every 5-7 years, at a cost of up to $35/m2. There is also the additional expense of repainting game lines.

Lower maintenance, greater durability

VariUse is classified as a low maintenance floor, featuring both a wear layer and a factory-applied X-PUR polyurethane protective treatment that lasts the product’s lifetime. This eliminates the need for sealing and polishing. However, regular care and cleaning remain essential to maximise the floor’s lifespan and appearance.

VariUse flooring also offers an aesthetic advantage with its wide range of colour options. From vibrant reds, blues and greens to striking pinks and yellows—or even traditional wood grains—design possibilities are endless. Floors can represent school or club colours or add bold accents for a dynamic sports environment.

In addition to VariUse, we offer a range of safe, durable sports floors, including multi-use and sports-specific surfaces designed for tennis, hockey and badminton.
