Polyamide verses polypropylene fibres

Fibrous entrance matting is specifically designed to absorb moisture and remove dirt, helping to protect interior flooring and enhance safety. The two most common materials used for entry mats are polyamide and polypropylene, each offering distinct advantages. Understanding their differences ensures you select the best fibre for your application.

Polyamide: The premium choice for entrance matting

Polyamide, a type of synthetic fibre also known by brand names like Nylon, is considered the optimum choice for entry matting due to its superior moisture absorption and dirt removal capabilities. For example, the Econyl® polyamide filament in Advance’s Symphony2 entry carpet absorbs up to 5.6 litres of water per m², as tested to ISO 105 standards.

For high-traffic areas, polyamide is the preferred choice because of its unique fibre structure, which combines fine yarn piles for moisture absorption and thicker monofilament piles for effective dirt scraping. This combination ensures enhanced safety, as wet floors are a major slip hazard in commercial and public buildings.

Polyamide’s durability and crush resistance also contribute to its popularity. The fibres retain their shape for longer, maintaining their effectiveness and aesthetic appeal over time. Additionally, polyamide is naturally more stain-resistant and fade-resistant than other fibres, making it an ideal choice for commercial, tertiary, and public building lobbies where appearance and performance matter.

Polypropylene: A cost-effective, practical alternative

Polypropylene, a thermoplastic fibre, is valued for its abrasive texture, which makes it highly effective at scraping dry dirt and debris off shoes. While it does not absorb moisture as effectively as polyamide, its lower cost makes it an affordable alternative for projects with budget constraints.

Polypropylene is commonly used as dirt-barrier runners in corridors, schools, gyms and industrial settings, where durability and floor protection are the main priorities. It is a versatile and practical solution for areas requiring dry dirt removal.

Choosing the right fibre for your project

Regardless of the fibre chosen, entry matting must effectively trap dirt and moisture, be easy to clean, and provide long-term protection for interior flooring. Polyamide and polypropylene both offer valuable qualities, and your final selection should be guided by traffic levels, moisture exposure and budget considerations.

Advance’s Architectural and Classic Series entry matting provides solutions with both premium polyamide and budget-friendly polypropylene inserts, ensuring the right fit for any project.
